Subject: North Pacific Argo float data: An Important Notice


Dear "North Pacific Argo float data set" users,

I have recently stopped updaing my dataset, due to a trouble in downloading
the original data from Argo Global Data Centers started in association with
the data format change in March 2006, but resumed today.
The data of May and June 2006 are now avaibable.  Please use them.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: I have found some floats with a wrong sequence
of profile numbers in the June 2006 data (please refer to the attached 
"bad_prof_num.txt" in which a sequence of profile numbers and dates
are shown for each float).  The data from these floats were processed 
through the AO (AOML, USA) data center.  For each of the floats, 
the profile number jumps and almost doubles around the mid-month,
and increases by 2 each time after that.  The reason is unknown, 
but it is not likely a mistake in our data processing.

We WILL NOT correct these bad profile numbers.  The reason is that
the profile numbers are originally not perfectly precise.  For example,
the profiles processed through GT (GTS) don't have a profile number.
Also, some (the percentage is very small) of the profiles from 
other data centers have wrong a profile number. (For example,
WMO ID 2900416: the profile took on Apr 28, 2006 should have
a profile number of 67, but has 83 instead.)

Therefore, I WOULD REQUEST that for the order of profiles
for a particular float, you refer to the observation date, not the
profile number.
